The Chromatographic Laboratory is located at Chemicum, room 4011. The laboratory provides analytical support for organic residue analysis and related cultural heritage research.
The main instrument here is the GC‑MS/FID (Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry/Flame Ionization Detection), operated under the supervision of the lab technician, Shidong Chen.
With GC-FID/MS we can identify organic molecules preserved in archaeological and cultural heritage materials, such as ceramic vessels and charred food crusts. By resolving their molecular composition, we can identify substances such as animal fats, plant oils, resins, tar, and beeswax. These findings help reconstruct ancient dietary habit, cooking practices, and the use of natural resources in past societies.
